Apple launches its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo
Published
TechnologyApple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale at Apple Store locations worldwide on Friday, Oct. 23.
What's new: Apple announced the iPhone Duo on Sept. 9. Closed, it has a 5.4-inch outer display; opened, it has a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple says is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. It runs on the A20 Pro chip with a dual-battery design, uses a Touch ID sensor in the side button, has a titanium enclosure and is rated IP68 for splash, water and dust resistance. Apple's tech specs list it at 5.2 mm thick open, 11.3 mm closed and 254 grams, with up to 24 hours of typical battery use. It starts at $1,999 in the U.S., with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options, in star white and night sky.
Why it matters: The iPhone Duo is Apple's first phone with a folding display and its first entry in the foldable phone category. Apple CEO John Ternus called it "the most transformational change to iPhone since the original." The larger inner screen supports Split View, which lets users open two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time.
Who it affects: Buyers in more than 70 countries and regions where it went on sale Oct. 23, including the U.S., the U.K., Canada, India and Japan; app developers, who can submit apps optimized for its two displays to the App Store now; and current iPhone owners weighing a larger screen.
What's next: iPhone Duo goes on sale in 28 more countries and regions on Friday, Oct. 30. Apple says support for Apple Pencil with USB-C is coming later this year. Siri AI is rolling out in beta, in English first.
