**The numbers:** [Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries](https://www.ssa.gov/news/en/press/releases/2026-10-14.html?ref=thevoiceofenablingtechnology.pmbofficial.com) get the increase starting in January 2027\. [About 7.3 million people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)](https://www.ssa.gov/news/en/press/releases/2026-10-14.html?ref=thevoiceofenablingtechnology.pmbofficial.com) see higher payments starting Dec. 31, 2026\. Retirement benefits rise by about $75 a month on average.

**Why it matters:** SSI is a lifeline for many people with disabilities and older adults with low incomes. The cost-of-living adjustment is tied to inflation and is automatic; nobody needs to apply.
