Social Security and SSI checks rise 3.6% for 2027
Published
PolicyThe Social Security Administration announced Oct. 14 that benefits will rise 3.6% for 2027.
The numbers: Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries get the increase starting in January 2027. About 7.3 million people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) see higher payments starting Dec. 31, 2026. Retirement benefits rise by about $75 a month on average.
Why it matters: SSI is a lifeline for many people with disabilities and older adults with low incomes. The cost-of-living adjustment is tied to inflation and is automatic; nobody needs to apply.
Who it affects: Social Security and SSI recipients, families who help manage benefits, and service coordinators who help people budget.
What to do: People with a my Social Security account can see their notice online starting in late November. Those without paperless notices get a letter by mail in December. Medicare premium details for 2027 come separately.
