The U.K. government on Oct. 24 announced a new set of artificial intelligence investments that it says will be part of next week's Budget, with health care, biological threat detection and AI safety at the center.

What's happening:

  • A £165 million National AI Biosecurity Initiative, including a £100 million AI Biosecurity Lab and £65 million for detecting biological threats and developing medical countermeasures. OpenAI and Anthropic will back the lab with up to £200 million in AI model credits, alongside partnerships with Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research.
  • £120 million more for the AI Security Institute and £60 million for a National Cyber Shield focused on agentic AI.
  • £60 million more for the Sovereign AI Fund, adding a focus on robotics, autonomous systems and advanced manufacturing, plus £60 million for an R&D procurement scheme aimed at the health and care system.
  • A £15 million AI Challenge Prize, with health care as the first award area, and £10 million a year to study AI's impact on jobs.

Why it matters: The package ties public AI spending directly to health and care delivery. The government points to NHS tools that already analyze more than 210,000 chest X-rays a month as the kind of work it wants to scale.

Who it affects: NHS and social care providers, health tech developers, AI researchers and U.K. regions, which share £30 million for local AI partnerships.

What's next: Final figures land when Chancellor John Healey presents the Budget.
